Pin It Button

Are you thinking or planning to conduct research project in Sarawak? And you are not sure if you need a research permit. This guide is intended to help you to answer this question according to the Sarawak Biodiversity Regulation, 2004.

Under the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (Amendment) Ordinance 2003, the Sarawak Biodiversity Council is given the responsibility to regulate research on biological resources in Sarawak as defined by the Ordinance.

Answering the following questions may help you find out whether you need a research permit.

  1. What type or kind of research do you intend to do?

Research as declared in the Regulation refers to any form of study, analysis, evaluation, isolation, testing, experiment, examination or screening of biological resources to determine their potential medicinal, pharmaceutical, therapeutic, nutritional or agriculture properties or qualities, but does not include:

  • any study, experiment, test or examination carried out within Sarawak, of biological resources in connection with any educational course or syllabus conducted by an approved institution which does not or is not intended to lead to the development and commercialization of their aforesaid properties, values or qualities; and
  • any study or activities on biological resources undertaken by any Department of the Government of Sarawak or any statutory body incorporated under State law, in carrying out their respective functions or duties.
  1. Does your research involve biological resources from Sarawak?

Biological resource includes any extracts, whether in liquid or solid form, tissues, by-product or derivative or synthesized form thereof and where the context so admits, protected resources.

If your research project falls under the terms or definition as mentioned above. Then, yes, you will need to apply for a research permit from Sarawak Biodiversity Centre.
