The microbial world represents one of the largest untapped genetic resources in biodiversity which produce biologically and chemically unique yet diverse natural products compound for drug discoveries. Sarawak, known for its rich flora and fauna, is anticipated too to have a rich microbial diversity.
Actinomycetes and fungi strains are isolated from environmental samples such as plant and soil samples collected from various types of forest ecosystem in Sarawak. An expanding collection of microbial cultures including many new and unique isolates produces an impressive array of natural products for bioprospecting.
SBC's in-house anti-microbial screening showed that extracts from these diverse microbial cultures exhibit specific and broad-spectrum activity against important pathogens making the extracts ideal as starting points for the discovery of new antibiotics.
