Sarawak Biodiversity Insights: featuring Biodiversity in Caves: Exploring Sarawak's Hidden Ecosystems by Rambli Ahmad

Rambli Ahmad

The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) will host its next Sarawak Biodiversity Insights session, Biodiversity in Caves: Exploring Sarawak's Hidden Ecosystems, featuring Rambli Ahmad on 24th September 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Members of the public are invited to attend either in person at Sarawak Biodiversity Centre or virtually through Zoom and Facebook Live.

In this talk, participants will be taken beneath Sarawak's forested landscapes into the seldom-seen world of caves. Rambli Ahmad, a seasoned cave explorer, geologist, and conservation practitioner, will draw on many years of field experience, including his participation in the Anglo-Malaysian caving expedition to Hidden Valley in Gunung Mulu National Park, to share insights from exploring and documenting these underground environments.

Beyond the adventure of moving through dark and complex passages, caves offer valuable windows into nature, science, and adaptation. The session will introduce audiences to the diverse life that exists in cave systems, ranging from visible cave-dwelling organisms to tiny life forms that play important roles in maintaining these fragile habitats.

Through field stories and practical observations, Rambli will explain how organisms survive in cave conditions and why these little-known ecosystems are important to Sarawak's biodiversity. The talk will also encourage greater appreciation for the connections between life above ground and the hidden ecological networks below it.

The programme will include a live question-and-answer segment, giving participants the chance to interact with the speaker. Admission is free. Those interested may register for the Zoom session at https://qrco.de/SBCTALK, reserve a place for physical attendance at Sarawak Biodiversity Centre through https://qrco.de/bfbhmk, or follow the livestream on SBC's official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/sarawak.biodiversity.centre
